A Nigerian man has received hundreds of thousands of naira in donations following attempting to sell his own roofing sheets to raise redemption money requested by the kidnappers of his 17-year-old son.

Saidu Faskari, 65, had himself been abducted in December in north-west Katsina state and was barely released following his son who took 50,000 naira ($121, £89) to the abductors last Thursday. The kidnappers subsequently grabbed him and freed his father.

Mr Faskari was requested to raise 100,000 naira ($242, £178) for the release of his son.

A video of him taking down his roofing sheets from his house went viral on social media following posting it on Facebook by a neighbor.

It is not clear how much had been raised by Tuesday nevertheless Mr Faskari said people should stop sending money because

“the target has been achieved”.

Kidnapping for ransom is widespread across Nigeria with abductors requesting anything from $50 (£37) to $1m (£734,000).
