Children aged nine and above will have to wear face masks in schools in the Republic of Ireland from today.

It comes as the first case of the Omicron variant has been established in the country, which we officially announced a a few days ago.

Unmasked students and staff will be denied entry if a medical certificate is not provided to show exception, the country’s education department says.

The demand to wear masks earlier applied to children aged 13 and above.

Schools have been told they can be adjustable in the first few days.
